Southern Cross Station Melbourne3000
Southern Cross was redeveloped by the Civic Nexus consortium, following an innovative design by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw which features an undulating roof. Construction began in October 2002 and was completed in late 2006, with the majority of the transport facilities having been finished in time for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
central features of the design include a wave-shaped roof, a new entrance and concourse on Collins Street, a new bus interchange, a new food court, a bar/restaurant, separate retail outlets inside the station and a separate shopping complex between Bourke and La Trobe Streets
Passenger services from Spencer Street Station – originally called Batman's Hill Railway Station – began in 1859. A public holiday was declared so the public could witness the departure of the first train to Williamstown on 13 January.
Batman's Hill, a pleasant and wooded knoll on the north bank of the Yarra, west of Spencer Street, was an historic site in the early European settlement of Victoria. In 1835 Batman and Fawkner established the city of Melbourne, and Batman built a home at the foot of the hill.
The $700 million transformation of the former Spencer Street Station precinct is one of the most significant infrastructure redevelopments Victoria has ever seen. Light, open, modern and safe, the transport interchange renamed Southern Cross Station in 2005, provides passengers with a truly 21st century travel experience.
The airport style transport interchange provides Victorians with a new world-class and iconic landmark. It is an impressive gateway which links the regions and the emerging Docklands precinct with the central business district of Melbourne.
